[ȓə 'greɪtful 'ded; englisch »Die dankbaren Toten«], 1965 in San Francisco auf Initiative des Gitarristen und Sängers Jerry Garcia (* 1942, ✝ 1995) entstandene amerikanische Rockgruppe. Um einen Kern von sechs bis acht Musikern bildete sich eine bis zu 70 Mitgliedern starke Großfamilie (Landkommune), die zum Symbol der Hippiekultur wurde. Ihre Musik, die sie anfangs häufig auf Freeconcerts spielten, war eine Mischung von präzisem Blues und Folkrock mit ausgedehnten Kollektivimprovisationen (»Dark star«; »Turn on your love light«). 1995 löste sich die Gruppe auf.
